Lloyd William Poppen

Thousand Oaks, CA

Lloyd William Poppen, age 83, passed away on July 1, 2018, surrounded by loving family members, at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks.

Lloyd was born in East Chicago on February 10, 1935, and grew up in Whiting, Indiana. He was the son of Albert and Sarah Poppen, and brother to Elaine, Thelma, and Norbert. After graduating with highest honors from his beloved Purdue University in 1956 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he moved west, and received his Master's at the University of Southern California. Not long after that, he attended a co-ed volleyball game in Hollywood, sponsored by the Catholic Alumni Club. He may not have won the game, but Lloyd definitely won the heart of who would become the love of his life, Jean Marie Ker. They married on April 4, 1959, and settled in Thousand Oaks.

Lloyd enjoyed a successful engineering career in the defense and aerospace industry that spanned decades. He designed radar systems for the Apache helicopter, and worked for leading companies such as RCA, Teledyne, and Northrop Grumman. Lloyd was also an active athlete and could always be found alongside his wife Jean on the tennis courts. A leader in both his community, as a youth basketball coach, and his church, as a longtime usher at Saint Paschal Baylon, he served as a constant inspiration to family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife Jean, Lloyd is survived by his four children, Cecile (Terry), Vince (Joell), Gregory, and Suzanne; eight grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley, Bret, Shane, Jake, Kylie, Sienna, and Nicolas; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 6 at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 155 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. Services will be followed by a reception in the St. Paschal Baylon Hall, which will continue until 1:00 p.m.
