Sally Marilyn (Maskell) Losey

Newbury Park, CA

Sally Marilyn (Maskell) Losey, age 79, died peacefully on February 19th surrounded by her family at her home in Newbury Park after a relatively brief struggle with cancer. Sally was born April 16, 1938 in Spokane, Washington, the daughter of Lyle and Mildred Maskell.

Sally grew up in Yakima, Washington with a love for animals. Her high school years included cheerleading and horseback riding. Afterwards, she spent a year at Whitworth College before meeting the love of her life on New Year's Eve 1958 at his parent's apple farm in Yakima. Jim left 2 weeks later for Marine Corps flight school in Pensacola, FL. Sally followed, and they were married 5 months and 13 days after their first meeting on June 13, 1959.

The next 6 years brought 3 sons and a Marine Corps wife's life watching her husband leave for 2 tours in Viet Nam, leaving her to care for the kids alone. During this time, they lived in several locations mostly in Southern California. Things changed when Jim moved from military aviation to commercial flying with Continental Airlines. The family settled in their Newbury Park home in 1966 where they have remained.

In addition to raising her sons, Sally has been very involved with her church and community, serving in the roles of deacon, cub scout leader, Christian Education Director, youth football photographer, Curves participant/evangelist and second-mom to dozens of her kid's friends.

Sally's hospitality was legendary. At various times she opened her home for the room and boarding of Vietnamese refugees, former drug addicts, a foreign exchange student, church workers and co-workers from the Holiday Inn.

Sally was a member of Monte Vista Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where many of the next generation given extra hugs to their surrogate "grandma".

Sally is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jim, sons, Jim, Jeff and John and their families (all in Newbury Park), her sister, Marge of Beaverton, Oregon, six grandchildren, 6 nieces and 2 nephews, 1 great-grandson, and a community and church that has known and loved her.

Sally's memorial service and celebration of life is scheduled for March 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Monte Vista Presbyterian Church, 3797 W. Lynn Rd., Newbury Park. Please come in festive colors (not black) and join with us in remembering her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Monte Vista Presbyterian Church.
