Thousand Oaks, CA

Robert “Bob” Vieth of Thousand Oaks passed away February 22, 2018 after a long illness, surrounded by his family. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 12, 1934 to loving parents Fred and Helen Kutsch Vieth. He was educated in Wauwautosa Public Schools. He received his BS in Physics in 1956 from University of Wisconsin, his MS in Physics in 1958 from UC Berkeley, and his PhD in Solid State Physics in 1963 from Michigan State University. He and his family moved to Thousand Oaks in 1964, and he spent over 30 years working in the aerospace and electronics industries.

Following his retirement he was free to pursue his other passions: tropical fruit, travel, and trolleys. A Master Gardener, he volunteered at the UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County for several years. A farmer at heart, he successfully grew blueberries, bananas, mangoes, cherimoyas, as well as plumeria and many other unusual plants. He was a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers Society for 50 years, and served as its president for several years. He was a master grafter and most of his fruit trees bore multiple varieties. He taught high school agricultural students how to graft apple trees for many years. He and Kathy traveled to over 65 countries on six continents.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 60 years, Kathleen Hamlin Vieth, two beloved daughters, Teri Vieth, MD, of Claremont California and Carol Cohen (Paul) of Piedmont, California and two adored grandchildren, Samuel and Emily Cohen.

A visitation and farewell gathering will take place on Saturday, March 3, at Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, 101 E. Wilbur Road, Thousand Oaks from 1-4 pm. Mr. Vieth will be interred at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, WI. In lieu of flowers please hug your loved ones.
